One of my favorite places to photograph families in Whitefish, Montana is the Lodge at Whitefish Lake.

The setting is stunning, with lake views, mountain backdrops, and forested areas — all just steps outside your room.

All of the families I photograph here are guests staying at the Lodge, which makes the whole experience incredibly easy. Instead of driving somewhere for photos, we simply meet inside the Lodge and walk down together to the lake.

This page will give you a look at what a family photography session at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake looks like, including some of the locations around the property and examples of the types of families and groups I photograph here.

You can check out more details about a family photography session here.

Where We Meet

We usually meet right inside the Lodge by Huckleberry the Bear in the coffee shop. It’s an easy place for families to find, and many people grab a coffee before the session.

From there we walk outside together toward Whitefish Lake and the docks.

If you are staying at a private home through The Lodge at Whitefish Lake, I’m also happy to meet you there for your session.

Where We Take Photos

One of the reasons I love photographing families at The Lodge is the variety of beautiful backdrops right on the property.

During a typical session we photograph around:

• the dock area along Whitefish Lake
• the lakeshore with mountain views
• the grassy lawn near the water

Everything is close together, so we can move between a few spots and create a wide variety of images all within steps of each other.

The Lawn with Whitefish Mountain Resort Views

My favorite spot for family photos at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake is the grassy lawn along the lake. From here we have beautiful views of Whitefish Mountain Resort, which creates a classic Montana mountain backdrop.

This open space works especially well for both smaller families and large extended family groups, and it gives us a different look from the dock photos.

The Docks at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

The docks at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake are another beautiful spot for family photos. From here we have open views of Whitefish Lake and the surrounding mountains, which create a classic Montana backdrop.

The dock works especially well for individual families, giving us clean lake views and a simple setting that highlights the scenery around Whitefish.

When I photograph large extended family groups, I often bring each individual family down to the dock for their own photos after we finish the big group portraits on the lawn. This gives everyone a variety of images from different locations around the property.

Photos Near the Willow Trees at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

I love adding the willow tree area to each session. The color here is incredible, and the light through the trees is just beautiful.

This area creates a completely different look from the lawn and dock photos. The rich greens and soft light make it one of my favorite places for portraits during a session.

What a Family Session at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake Is Like

Family sessions at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake usually last about an hour. We start by meeting inside the lodge near Huckleberry the Bear in the coffee shop, which is an easy spot for families to find. Many people grab a coffee before we head outside.

From there we walk out toward the lake together and start photographing around the dock, lawn, and willow tree areas. Everything is close together, so we can move between a few beautiful spots and create a nice variety of photos during the session.

One of the reasons families love doing photos here is how easy it is. If you're staying at the lodge, you can simply step outside your room and meet me for the session without having to drive anywhere.

The session moves quickly and naturally, and kids have plenty of freedom to move around while we photograph. By the end, most families say how fun it was — and how quickly the time flew by.

What to Wear for Family Photos at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

Choosing what to wear for family photos doesn’t have to be complicated. Some families prefer coordinating colors, while others like matching outfits, and both work beautifully in photos. The most important thing is choosing clothing that you feel comfortable and confident wearing.

Soft neutrals, blues, greens, and earth tones tend to photograph especially well with the natural colors around The Lodge at Whitefish Lake.

Try to avoid bright neon colors or large logos since those can draw attention away from faces. Beyond that, it’s really about choosing outfits that feel like you.

When everyone feels comfortable and happy in what they’re wearing, it shows in the photos.

Some families love to dress up, while others keep things more casual—and both photograph beautifully. What matters most is choosing outfits that feel like you and that you feel your best in.
