Lucas & Maya's Lone Pine State Park Proposal in Kalispell, Montana

Lucas and Maya's Lone Pine State Park proposal was one of those afternoons I will never forget.

The plan was simple, and everything came together exactly as Lucas had hoped.

Lucas and Maya were out for a hike at Lone Pine State Park in Kalispell, Montana, and their plan was to finish at the overlook with those incredible views over the Flathead Valley, Flathead Lake, and toward Glacier National Park.

Meanwhile, I was already up there, sitting in a chair and fully pretending to be just another person relaxing and enjoying the view. Very casual. Nothing suspicious at all. Ha!

Maya's mom and brothers were hidden just out of sight behind a little knoll near the overlook, waiting for the big moment.

The Proposal

When Lucas and Maya reached the overlook, they stopped to soak in the view together. They hugged, took in the scenery, and enjoyed a quiet moment before everything got VERY exciting.

What made this proposal even more special was how much thought Lucas had put into it. From choosing the overlook at Lone Pine State Park to coordinating with both families and keeping everything a surprise, he had carefully planned every detail. It was obvious how much he loves Maya and how important it was to him to create a moment she would never forget.

Lucas had told me his cue would be scratching his head. So when he did it, I knew it was go time.

He stepped over to a nearby rock, got down on one knee, and asked Maya to marry him.

And Maya's reaction was EPIC.

I mean, truly one of the biggest proposal reactions I have ever photographed. She jumped up and down, hugged Lucas, bounced around the overlook, jumped some more, and basically turned into Tigger with a diamond ring. It was amazing.

Then her family popped out from their hiding spot, and the excitement somehow got even bigger. A few moments later, Lucas's family came walking up the path too, and Maya went flying toward them with that same giant, happy, bouncing energy.

Everyone was laughing, hugging, celebrating, and having an absolute blast. The whole overlook was filled with excitement, and it was impossible not to smile watching it all unfold.

Celebrating Their Engagement

After the family photos, Maya changed out of her hiking clothes and into one of several outfits her mom had thoughtfully brought along for the day. She was definitely prepared!

We spent the next hour exploring the overlook and capturing engagement photos with those incredible views stretching across the Flathead Valley.

The truth is, Maya could have worn just about anything and looked amazing. She's naturally beautiful, but what really stands out is her energy. It's infectious. She has the kind of excitement and joy that draws people in and makes everyone around her smile. Even after the proposal, she was still absolutely glowing.

Between the mountain views, their excitement, and one of the most epic proposal reactions I've ever photographed, this turned into such a fun afternoon and an amazing engagement session.

By the time we wrapped up, everyone was off to Whitefish for an afternoon picnic and more celebrating.

How the met

How They Met

As if the proposal story wasn't already good enough, Lucas and Maya's "how we met" story is adorable.

They first met while chatting at Wag Park in Whitefish. After they left, Lucas realized he wished he had gotten Maya's number. Later that same day, he pulled into his driveway and spotted her nearby picking berries.

Trying not to sound like a total stalker, he said, "I promise I'm not following you... this is where I live."

Maya's response?

"What?! I live next door!"

And that was that.

A Fun Full-Circle Moment

As a fun little full-circle moment, I actually photographed Lucas's senior photos about five years ago.

One of the things I love most about being a photographer in the Flathead Valley is getting to see people through different seasons of life. Getting to photograph Lucas as a high school senior and then years later getting to capture the moment he asked the love of his life to marry him felt incredibly special.

It's easy to see why these two are such a great match. Lucas is incredibly thoughtful and kind, and Maya's infectious energy lights up every room she walks into.

From neighbors in Whitefish to an epic proposal at Lone Pine State Park, this day could not have been more perfect.

Congratulations, Lucas and Maya! I loved every second of this one.
