Henry planned his surprise proposal to Rileigh at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake on a windy spring evening in Whitefish, Montana. Dark storm clouds moved across Whitefish Lake, bringing gusty winds, occasional sprinkles of rain, and even flashes of lightning in the distance.

The weather kept most people indoors, leaving the docks surprisingly quiet for an evening at The Lodge. In fact, there were only two groups outside that evening—me, pretending to be a tourist taking selfies by the lake, and another couple fishing from the dock. After quietly filling them in on Henry's plan, they happily played along and helped keep the surprise intact.

Henry had dinner reservations at The Boat Club Restaurant at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake, but before dinner he suggested taking a walk down to the water to enjoy the views and have a cocktail by the lake. With dramatic skies rolling across Whitefish Lake and the wind creating small waves beneath the docks, it felt like the perfect opportunity to take in the evening together.

What Rileigh didn't know was that Henry had something much bigger planned.

As they made their way through the lodge and out onto the docks, they stopped to enjoy the view across Whitefish Lake. Expecting another photo with the mountains and lake behind her, Rileigh turned toward the water. That's when Henry dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.

The plan came together exactly as Henry had hoped.

After she said yes, we spent the rest of the evening exploring The Lodge at Whitefish Lake for engagement photos. The changing weather created dramatic Montana skies that added incredible texture and atmosphere to the evening. We photographed around the lodge grounds, along the shoreline of Whitefish Lake, and even headed out for a canoe ride that nearly ended with the two of them tipping into the water. Between the laughter, the wind, and the constantly changing light, the evening felt relaxed, adventurous, and completely true to who they are as a couple.

Henry and Rileigh's surprise proposal was a reminder that perfect weather isn't what makes a moment memorable. Sometimes it's the unexpected conditions—a little wind, a few raindrops, dramatic skies, and an almost-empty dock overlooking Whitefish Lake—that make the experience even better.
